Missing jigsaw piece - the complex simplicity

missing jigsaw

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, businesses are constantly on the lookout for streamlined solutions to enhance their operational efficiency. One such approach gaining traction is composable commerce. At its core, it promises the allure of modularity, allowing businesses to piece together the best-of-breed solutions tailored to their unique needs. However, a common sentiment echoed in the industry is that composable commerce is a complex beast. But, is it inherently difficult or have we over-complicated it?

The Integration Predicament

One of the most cited complexities surrounding composable commerce is the integration between various products. To achieve seamless interoperability between different systems, businesses often resort to custom development, crafting an integration layer. This not only involves significant development efforts but also necessitates the creation of infrastructure and a commitment to maintaining the solution. In essence, while chasing flexibility, businesses quite often create a web of custom dependencies that tie them down instead of enabling them.

Challenging the Integration Status Quo

But let's step back for a moment and challenge this integration paradigm. Isn't it all just data that we are trying to move and manipulate? The different systems, at their heart, hold data – such as customer information, order details, or product specifics. Instead of entangling ourselves in intricate integration layers, imagine a scenario where all this data resides in one place. The data, then, can be seamlessly transported to where it's needed using Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes. Such a shift in perspective simplifies the entire orchestration, ensuring data consistency and reducing integration challenges.

iPaaS: A Solution or Another Layer of Complexity?

Enter Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS), hailed by many as the silver bullet for integration woes. However, while existing iPaaS solutions offer a plethora of tools for integration, it often inadvertently pushes businesses towards point-to-point integrations. This approach tends to be shortsighted, leading to a mesh of connections that are hard to manage and even harder to change. Instead of genuinely leveraging the data to orchestrate a seamless integration, businesses find themselves in the quagmire of managing multiple connections. What's needed is a shift from a mere integration mindset to one that emphasises a 360-degree view of data flow, understanding where each piece goes and how it interplays with others.

In Conclusion

The philosophy behind composable commerce is undeniably powerful, offering businesses the agility they crave. However, to genuinely harness its potential, it's crucial to shift our perspective on integration. Instead of creating custom layers and point-to-point connections, the focus should be on centralising data and using it as the linchpin for all integrations. Only then can we demystify the complexity associated with composable commerce, unlocking its true, simple potential.
